What’s Air Fryer Safe? Foil, Parchment & More

An air fryer is a small convection oven with a powerful fan — so the temperatures are oven-like, but the fast-moving air adds one hazard the oven doesn’t: lightweight materials can get blown into the heating element and catch fire. That single difference explains most air-fryer rules.

The air-fryer rules that matter

• Nothing loose or light. A bare paper towel or an untethered sheet of parchment can lift into the element. Weigh anything down with food.
• Don’t block the airflow. Lining the whole basket traps heat and can cause overheating; leave room for air to move.
• Treat it like an oven for temperature. If a material isn’t oven-safe at your set temperature, it isn’t air-fryer-safe either.
• Foil and acidic food don’t mix. Tomatoes, citrus, and vinegar can eat through foil and leave metal on your food.

Common items in the air fryer
