Can You Microwave Cardboard? The 451°F Rule

Conditional Short answer: In a microwave, usually yes — plain, unprinted, uncoated cardboard is a poor absorber of microwaves, so the food heats and the box only gets as hot as what it’s touching. In an oven or an air fryer, no: the accepted ignition temperature of paper is 451 °F (233 °C), which sits inside ordinary baking range, and every frozen-pizza maker tells you to take the cardboard out first. What actually catches people out is that a box is rarely just paper — metallic ink, foil linings, wire handles, wax and plastic coatings, and soaked-in grease are the real failure modes.

“Cardboard” covers two different things in a kitchen. Corrugated board — the pizza box, the shipping carton — is a fluted sheet sandwiched between flat linerboards and joined with a starch-based adhesive, with a moisture content of only 6.5 to 9.5%. Paperboard — the cereal box, the takeout carton, the frozen-pizza disc — is a single thicker sheet. Both are dry, both are full of trapped air, and neither one is inert once it’s coated or printed. That’s the whole story, and every answer below falls out of it.

Can you microwave cardboard?

Conditional Yes for a plain box with food in it, and the reason is the same one that makes paper plates workable. A microwave doesn’t heat the container; it heats the water in the food. As the FDA puts it, glass, paper, ceramic and plastic containers are used “because microwaves pass through these materials,” and although “such containers cannot be heated by microwaves, they can become hot from the heat of the food cooking inside.” So a cardboard carton of leftover noodles is only ever as hot as the noodles — nowhere near 451°F. The hazards are all things added to the board, plus one thing soaked into it.

  • Nothing metallic, anywhere. Metallic ink on a logo, a foil or metallised liner, the wire handle on a Chinese-takeout pail, a staple in the seam — each one arcs. GE Appliances warns that even paper goods can carry hidden metal: “Some paper towels made with recycled paper contain particles of metal which may cause arcing or ignite.” If you can’t see the whole box, assume you can’t see the metal either.
  • Recycled and printed board is the doubtful category. GE’s guidance on disposables is that it “is best to use white or unprinted types,” and that “recycled plates can contain foreign materials and should be monitored during cooking.” Most food cartons are recycled fibre. Watch them.
  • Never run a box empty or nearly empty. Corrugated board holds only 6.5–9.5% moisture, so there’s very little water in it to absorb energy and nothing to carry heat away. With food in it, the food is the heat sink. Without food, the box is the only thing in the cavity, and a microwave with nothing to heat is how cardboard catches fire.
  • Grease is the real accelerant. A pizza box that has had a hot pizza sitting in it is not dry board any more; it’s board impregnated with fat, and fat reaches far higher temperatures than water in local hot spots. This is the single most common way a “harmless” box scorches.
  • Wax and plastic linings melt. Ice-cream cartons, some soup cups and many frozen-food cartons are coated in polyethylene or wax. That coating fails long before the paper does, straight into the food.
  • Short bursts, and stay in the room. Thirty to sixty seconds at a time, checked between, is the sensible way to reheat in board. Ten unattended minutes is not.

The myth: “that grey cardboard disc has to come out of the microwave too”

It’s the opposite. The dull silver-grey tray or disc packed with a microwavable pizza, a sandwich or a Hot Pockets-style sleeve is a susceptor, and it is engineered to do exactly the thing you’ve been told cardboard must never do in a microwave: get hot. It’s paperboard laminated with a metallised film thin enough to absorb microwave energy rather than reflect it. The film “absorbs microwaves which penetrate the packaging,” and “this process raises the susceptor patch temperature to levels where it may then heat food by conduction” — which is how you get a crisp base in an appliance that otherwise only steams. Such sheets “are currently used in several types of packaging for heating and cooking products in microwave ovens.”

Two practical consequences. First, when the packet tells you to microwave the food on its tray, do it — removing the susceptor doesn’t make it safer, it just makes the crust soggy. Second, a susceptor is a microwave-only device: it is metallised, it is designed to run hot, and it does not belong in an oven or an air fryer. And the plain white or brown cardboard disc under a frozen (oven-baked) pizza is not a susceptor at all — that one comes out, every time, as the next section explains.

The other thing in the box: grease-proofing chemistry

Food cartons resist grease because something was added to make them resist grease. For years that something was often PFAS. The FDA’s own list of food-contact uses names the applications precisely — grease-proofing agents in “wrappers, microwave popcorn bags, take-out paperboard containers, and pet food bags” — and explains the mechanism of concern: these agents “are applied to paper/paperboard packaging at lower temperatures, which are not high enough to remove residual smaller (i.e., migratable) PFAS molecules,” so “there is potential for PFAS to migrate to food at levels that may result in a potential safety concern.”

The good news is dated. “In February 2024, the FDA announced that substances containing PFAS used as grease-proofing agents on paper and paperboard for food contact use are no longer being sold by manufacturers into the U.S. market,” and the agency has since revoked the associated authorisations. So a carton bought new in the United States today should not have PFAS grease-proofing in it. That is a supply-chain change, not a physics change: it doesn’t make cardboard oven-safe, and it says nothing about the ink, the adhesive or the wax lining. If a container is holding hot, fatty food and you have a plate to hand, use the plate.

Can you put cardboard in the oven?

Unsafe No — and this is the one answer on this page with no conditions attached. The Physics Factbook’s survey of the sources behind the famous figure concludes that “the ignition temperature of paper is 451 degrees Fahrenheit, or 233 degrees Celsius.” A domestic oven bakes at 350–450°F and broils far hotter. There is no comfortable margin, and there is no oven setting that makes a box safe.

The manufacturers who ship food on cardboard agree, in writing. Home Run Inn’s official baking instructions for its frozen pizzas are unambiguous: “Slide pizza off cardboard disc, directly onto the middle rack of the preheated oven. Do not cook pizza with cardboard disc.” Note what the company does suggest keeping it for — “remove pizza from oven using the cardboard disc, cookie sheet, or cutting board” — so the disc is a serving aid, not a baking sheet. The same applies to the pizza box, the takeout carton and the delivery tray: none of them go in.

The myth: “my oven is only on 375°F, and paper doesn’t burn until 451°F”

This is the reasoning behind almost every scorched-pizza-box story, and it fails on four counts at once.

  • The dial is an average, not a maximum. 375°F is the air temperature the thermostat is aiming at. The electric element or gas burner producing that average is glowing at several hundred degrees more, and it cycles on and off to hold the setting. Board resting on a low rack, near a wall, or under a broiler is not sitting in 375°F air — it’s exposed to a radiant source far above its ignition point.
  • 451°F is a threshold, not a wall. Below it, cardboard doesn’t sit there unchanged: it browns, embrittles, chars and smokes, and the glue, ink and any coating break down and off-gas into whatever you’re about to eat.
  • A used box isn’t clean paper. Grease soaked into the fibres burns hotter and more readily than the fibres do, which is why the box that’s already held a pizza is the one that flares.
  • Corrugated board is mostly air. The fluting that makes it strong also makes it an insulator, so a thin liner facing the heat has almost nothing behind it to conduct the energy away. The surface reaches a much higher temperature than the box as a whole.

If you want a disposable that genuinely survives a hot oven, that’s an aluminium foil tray or purpose-made ovenable paperboard sold and marked as such — not a delivery box. Can you put cardboard in an air fryer?

Unsafe No, and an air fryer is the worst of the five appliances for it. It’s a small convection oven running at 300–400°F, so the ignition argument above applies in full — but it adds a second mechanism the oven doesn’t have: a bare heating element with a fan blowing hard at the basket. Philips states the problem plainly for materials that are heat-resistant: “If you put baking paper or tin foil in your Philips Airfryer without placing food on it, the baking paper or tin foil could be sucked into the heating element and start to burn.” A stiff piece of cardboard is lighter than a foil sheet and larger in area.

There is no version that works: not a box as a basket liner, not a cardboard tray to catch drips, not a pizza disc “just for two minutes.” Tip the food straight into the basket, or use a perforated parchment round or a silicone liner sold for the appliance — weighted down by food, per the same rule. Can you put cardboard in the freezer?

Conditional Yes, with one limitation that matters more than people expect: cardboard is not a moisture barrier. The National Center for Home Food Preservation is specific about the everyday cartons people reuse: “Cardboard cartons for cottage cheese, ice cream and milk are not sufficiently moisture vapor resistant to be suitable for long term freezer storage, unless they are lined with a freezer bag or wrap.” Freezer packaging has to be “moisture vapor resistant” first of all, and plain board simply isn’t.

  • An outer box is fine; a bare box is not. Cardboard is excellent for stacking, labelling and keeping things from crushing. Put the food in a freezer bag or a wrap and the box in the freezer around it.
  • A few weeks is the honest limit for bare board. Moisture leaves the food through the carton, which is freezer burn by another name — slow, invisible, and irreversible.
  • Board absorbs odours and grease both ways. A carton that has held one strong-smelling food will pass it to the next.
  • Frozen doesn’t cancel the other answers. A frozen pizza on its cardboard disc still needs the disc removed before it goes anywhere near heat.

Is cardboard dishwasher safe?

[N/A] The question doesn’t apply: cardboard is single-use, so there is nothing to wash. A box in a dishwasher turns to wet pulp, blocks the spray arms and clogs the filter. Dispose of it instead — clean, dry board recycles well, while heavily greasy sections are generally kept out of the paper stream, so check your local rules rather than assuming either way. Why cardboard behaves differently in each appliance

One number and one question decide all five answers. The number is 451 °F, paper’s ignition temperature. The question is whether the appliance heats the cardboard directly, or only heats the food inside it.

  • Microwave (conditional): the energy goes through the board into the food, so the board only reaches food temperature — around 212°F at most, less than half the ignition point. What makes it conditional is contamination, not temperature: metal, coatings and soaked-in grease.
  • Freezer (conditional): no heat at all, so the only property that matters is permeability — and paper fibre lets water vapour through in both directions.
  • Oven (unsafe): hot air surrounds the board directly and radiant elements are hotter still, so the cardboard climbs toward oven temperature rather than food temperature. 350–450°F against a 451°F ignition point is not a margin.
  • Air fryer (unsafe): the oven problem plus a fan and an exposed element. Even heat-resistant paper gets lifted into the element, as Philips warns; cardboard would arrive there already close to ignition.
  • Dishwasher (n/a): not a heat problem at all — paper fibre and a water jet are simply incompatible.

  • Microwave: usually fine, conditionally — plain uncoated board, food inside it, short bursts, no metal, no wax lining, no greasy pizza box. A plate is still better.
  • Freezer: yes, as an outer container — but line or wrap the food, because cardboard is not moisture-vapour resistant.
  • Oven: no, with no exception — 451°F ignition against a 350–450°F bake, and the pizza makers themselves say remove the disc.
  • Air fryer: no — oven heat plus a fan that can pull it onto a bare element.
  • Dishwasher: not applicable — it’s disposable, and it disintegrates.
  • The exception worth knowing: the grey metallised crisping tray in a microwavable meal is a susceptor, built to get hot in a microwave. Follow the packet — and never put that one in an oven.
